Nairobi, city and savannah
Nairobi’s skyline beside open wildlife country is one of Kenya’s distinctive contrasts. Its business role and the wider country’s visitor experiences deserve separate time and attention.
Republic of Kenya
A serious business and conference hub as well as a wildlife destination. Reducing Kenya to safari misses most of what it is.
We coordinate visits here, and there are conditions worth talking through first.
Kenya is open and we coordinate visits here, but named counties and two Nairobi neighbourhoods carry a Level 4 Do Not Travel designation from the US State Department within an otherwise Level 2 country. We plan around those areas rather than pretending the country is uniform. Kenya is also a research market for business, not a Capital Africa hub, so our role here is planning and introduction rather than established local operations.

Open grassland, giraffes and a city on the horizon make this park a distinctive introduction to Kenya’s wildlife. The destination guide sets out the wider possibilities and areas covered by our visit planning.

Kenya is the most developed visitor market Capital Africa covers, and the one most often misread. It is routinely reduced to safari. Nairobi is a regional business capital with a financial sector, a technology industry and a conference infrastructure that draws delegations from across East Africa, and a visit built only around parks misses the reason many people are actually travelling.
That said, the wildlife is genuine and it is what brings most leisure visitors. The parks and reserves are managed as a national system, and the coast around Mombasa is a separate destination in its own right with its own Swahili cultural history.
The country is not uniform, and this matters practically. The US State Department places Kenya at Level 2 overall while designating several counties and two Nairobi neighbourhoods as Level 4 Do Not Travel. Any itinerary has to be built with those exclusions in front of it rather than discovered later.
Kenya also runs a real business-events calendar. The Magical Kenya Travel Expo, organised by the Kenya Tourism Board, is scheduled for 6 to 8 October 2026 at Uhuru Gardens in Nairobi.
What this destination suits
Nairobi is a genuine regional business destination, with an established conference and events infrastructure and reach into Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania and beyond. It is also the most natural place in our coverage to combine a business trip with a planned leisure extension, because the parks and the coast are a short domestic flight away. We coordinate the business itinerary and the extension as one plan.
Organised by the Kenya Tourism Board and scheduled for 6 to 8 October 2026 at Uhuru Gardens, Nairobi. Reported delegate and exhibitor figures vary between sources and are not published here.
The city hosts regional business events across the year. Specific venues and dates are confirmed at planning time.
The capital and the regional business centre. Financial services, technology, conference venues, museums and a national park within the city boundary.
The principal port and the coastal city. Swahili architecture, Old Town, and the gateway to the beach coast.
On Lake Victoria, in the west. Regional commercial centre.
In the Rift Valley, and a base for the surrounding lakes and parks.
The historic Swahili coastal quarter, reflecting Arab, Portuguese, Indian and African influence over several centuries.
A practical orientation to the country before travelling out of the city.
Language, food and architecture along the coast, distinct from the interior.
Kenya manages wildlife areas as a national system. Specific parks, seasons and access are planned against the current advisory exclusions and are confirmed at the time of planning rather than assumed from a list.
A wildlife area on the edge of the capital, which makes a short wildlife experience possible inside a business trip.
A distinct landscape and birdlife region within reach of Nairobi and Nakuru.
The established beach coast, reached by air from Nairobi in about an hour.
Named in the US advisory as an area not to travel to. We do not plan itineraries here.
Arrival and gateways
The principal international gateway and the main regional hub for East Africa.
The coastal gateway, with international and domestic traffic.
Domestic air links Nairobi to Mombasa and to the main wildlife areas, and is the normal way to cover distance. Road transport is used within cities and for shorter transfers. Traffic in Nairobi is a real scheduling constraint and business itineraries are built around it rather than in spite of it.
Kenya has two rainy periods, the long rains around March to May and the short rains around October to December, with regional variation. Wildlife viewing conditions and coastal weather both track these. Nairobi business travel is workable year round.
Kenya operates an Electronic Travel Authorization rather than a visa for most visitors, applied for online before travel through the official government service. Citizens of East African Community partner states are treated separately. Processing takes several working days and applications should be made well ahead of departure. Fees and eligibility change and are not published here. Apply only through the official government portal, because a large number of look-alike commercial sites charge a markup.

Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution, with Level 4 Do Not Travel areas
Increased caution nationally because of crime, kidnapping, terrorism, unrest, health and road safety, with named areas at Do Not Travel.
