Dakar and the Atlantic peninsula

Republic of Senegal
The regional capital of francophone West Africa. Business, heritage, music and coast within a short radius of Dakar.
We coordinate visits here now.

Off Dakar, Gorée carries an important history of the Atlantic slave trade. Its streets and harbour invite an informed, thoughtful encounter with that history.

Senegal is the most straightforward entry point to francophone West Africa, and Dakar carries a weight that is out of proportion to the country’s size. It is a regional business capital, a cultural centre with an internationally significant music and food scene, and the base for two UNESCO heritage sites within easy reach.
The US State Department places Senegal at Level 1, Exercise Normal Precautions, which is the lowest advisory band and the only Level 1 country in this coverage. That does not make the whole country uniform: the Casamance region in the south has a history of banditry and residual landmines from past conflict, and we do not plan itineraries there.
Gorée Island, inscribed by UNESCO in 1978, sits a short ferry ride from Dakar and is the single most visited heritage site in the country. Saint-Louis, the former colonial capital, is inscribed separately for its island urban fabric. Both carry real significance for diaspora and heritage travellers, and both reward a guide who can place them properly.
For business visitors, Dakar and the newer Diamniadio development are the working centres, and Senegal shares a border with The Gambia on three sides, which makes a combined itinerary across both countries practical in a way it rarely is elsewhere in the region.
What this destination suits
Dakar is the regional business centre for francophone West Africa, and Diamniadio adds newer conference and government capacity. French is the working language of business and an interpreter is often the difference between a productive meeting and a polite one. Because Senegal surrounds The Gambia, a combined business itinerary across the two countries is genuinely practical, and we plan it as one trip.
The capital, on the Cap-Vert peninsula. Business districts, markets, museums, restaurants and the live music scene.
A planned urban and business development between the airport and Dakar, with conference and government facilities.
The former capital, on an island at the Senegal River mouth. Inscribed by UNESCO for its colonial urban fabric, and known for its jazz festival.
The established coastal resort area south of Dakar.
Inscribed by UNESCO in 1978. From the fifteenth to the nineteenth century it was the largest slave-trading centre on the African coast, and it remains one of the most significant memorial sites of the transatlantic slave trade. A short ferry from Dakar.
A UNESCO-inscribed island city, founded as a French settlement in the seventeenth century and capital of Senegal from 1872 to 1957.
Inscribed by UNESCO in 2006. Two of the four groups, Sine Ngayène and Wanar, are in Senegal, with the other two across the border in The Gambia.
A live music tradition of international standing, and a distinctive national cuisine. Best approached with someone who knows where and when.
A UNESCO-inscribed wetland in the Senegal River delta near Saint-Louis, and a major site on the migratory bird route.
The established resort coast south of Dakar, with the widest range of accommodation.
Beaches and surf within the city, used more by residents than by visitors.
Arrival and gateways
The principal international gateway, roughly 45km from central Dakar. The main regional hub for francophone West Africa.
Ground transport is by road, and the motorway between Blaise Diagne airport, Diamniadio and Dakar carries most arrivals. Saint-Louis is a long day’s drive north or a short domestic flight. The land border with The Gambia is crossed regularly and is planned rather than improvised.
The dry season runs roughly November to May and is the comfortable window for coastal and heritage travel. The rains, roughly June to October, bring humidity and heavier weather, particularly in the south. The Saint-Louis jazz festival and other cultural events fall on their own calendar and are confirmed at planning time rather than assumed.
Many nationalities, including EU member states, the United States, Canada and most ECOWAS countries, enter Senegal without a visa for short stays. A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required, and evidence of onward travel may be requested. Eligibility and passport validity rules differ by nationality and change without notice. Confirm your own position with a Senegalese diplomatic mission before booking.

Level 1: Exercise Normal Precautions
The lowest advisory band. Sporadic armed banditry is reported in the Casamance region, where landmines from earlier conflict also remain a concern.
