We coordinate visits here, and there are conditions worth talking through first.

Two credible governments currently describe Tanzania differently, and we are not going to resolve that disagreement by picking the more convenient one. The US State Department raised Tanzania to Level 3, Reconsider Travel, on 31 October 2025 and that level remains in effect. The UK FCDO, updated 19 May 2026, applies no blanket advisory and advises against all but essential travel only within 20km of the Mozambique border. We coordinate visits here, and we put that divergence in front of anyone planning one so they can weigh it themselves.

01 / City & connections

Dar es Salaam and the Indian Ocean

Dar es Salaam offers an urban and coastal introduction to Tanzania. Its setting is quite different from the northern safari landscapes and the historic streets of Zanzibar.

02 / Landscape & heritage

The open plains of the Serengeti

The Serengeti’s grasslands and wildlife are a defining part of Tanzania’s natural heritage. A considered itinerary gives these distances, landscapes and seasons the time they need.

The Destination

What Tanzania Actually Is.

Written from official sources and reviewed August 2026. Where a claim could not be settled, it is not here.

Tanzania carries three quite different destinations inside one country. The northern wildlife circuit around Arusha, with the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater. Kilimanjaro, which is a mountain expedition rather than a holiday and needs to be planned as one. And Zanzibar, an island archipelago with its own tourism authority, its own Swahili cultural history and its own entry formalities.

Dar es Salaam is the commercial capital and the main port, and it is where business travel concentrates, though Dodoma is the official capital. Arusha functions as the operational base for the northern circuit and hosts regional institutions.

The travel picture is genuinely contested at the moment. The US State Department has held Tanzania at Level 3, Reconsider Travel, since 31 October 2025, citing unrest, crime, terrorism and the targeting of gay and lesbian individuals. The UK FCDO position, updated 19 May 2026, is much narrower: no blanket advisory, and against all but essential travel only within 20km of the border with Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado province. We state both rather than averaging them.

Zanzibar operates separately in ways that affect a traveller directly, including its own visitor insurance requirement introduced in 2024, purchased on arrival from the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation.

Business Travel

Why People Come.

Dar es Salaam is the commercial and port centre and the practical base for business travel. Arusha hosts regional institutions and conference activity. Tanzania is a natural business-and-leisure combination, because the northern circuit and Zanzibar are both a short domestic flight from the commercial centre, and we plan the extension as part of the same itinerary rather than as an afterthought.

Cities and Areas

Where You Would Be.

  • Dar es Salaam

The commercial capital and principal port. Where business travel concentrates.

  • Arusha

The operational base for the northern wildlife circuit, and a regional institutional centre.

  • Zanzibar City and Stone Town

The island capital, with a Swahili, Arab, Indian and European architectural history.

  • Dodoma

The official capital, inland and administrative.

What Is Actually There

Worth the Journey.

Culture and heritage

  • Stone Town, Zanzibar[3]

The historic quarter of Zanzibar City, reflecting centuries of Swahili, Arab, Indian and European exchange on the Indian Ocean trade routes.

  • Coastal Swahili culture

Language, food, music and architecture along the coast and the islands, distinct from the interior.

Nature and wildlife

  • The northern circuit[2]

The Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater are the anchors of Tanzanian wildlife travel, reached from Arusha. Park access, fees and conditions are managed nationally and are confirmed at planning time rather than assumed.

  • Kilimanjaro

A mountain expedition requiring physical preparation, acclimatisation planning and a licensed operator. It is not a trip that can be added casually to a business visit, and we will say so.

  • Mafia Island

A quieter marine area south of Zanzibar, known for its reef and marine park.

Coast and beach

  • Zanzibar[3]

The principal island destination, with the widest range of coastal accommodation. Its own tourism authority and its own entry formalities.

  • Mafia Island

A smaller and quieter alternative, with fewer services.

Practical Travel

Getting There, and Around.

Arrival and gateways

  • Julius Nyerere International Airport, Dar es SalaamDAR

The principal international gateway and the commercial centre.

  • Kilimanjaro International AirportJRO

The gateway for the northern wildlife circuit and for Kilimanjaro, between Arusha and Moshi.

  • Abeid Amani Karume International Airport, ZanzibarZNZ

The island gateway, with international and mainland connections.

Local transport

Domestic air is the normal way to move between Dar es Salaam, the northern circuit and Zanzibar. Road transport covers shorter transfers and the northern circuit itself. Distances on the mainland are large and driving times are routinely underestimated.

When to go

Tanzania has long rains around March to May and short rains around November to December, with regional variation. Wildlife viewing, Kilimanjaro climbing windows and Zanzibar weather all track those seasons differently, so the right months depend on which of the three you are actually planning around.

Entry requirements

Tanzania operates an online e-visa applied for before departure through the official immigration service, with a visa on arrival route at designated entry points. Requirements differ by nationality, and US passport holders are subject to a different visa category from most other nationalities. Zanzibar separately requires visitors to hold insurance purchased from the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation on arrival, introduced in 2024. Fees change and are not published here. Confirm your own position through the official immigration service before booking.

Health and safety

  • Yellow fever certificate requirements depend on your routing and countries previously visited. Take medical advice on this specifically.
  • Malaria prophylaxis is a standard medical question for this region.
  • The US and UK advisories differ materially. Read both before deciding, and note that travelling against your own government’s advice can invalidate travel insurance.
  • The US advisory specifically references the targeting of gay and lesbian individuals. Travellers for whom that is relevant should weigh it directly.
  • Zanzibar requires visitor insurance purchased on arrival from the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation.
  • We do not plan travel within 20km of the Mozambique border.

UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office

No blanket advisory, with a regional exclusion

Advises against all but essential travel to any area within 20km of the border with the Cabo Delgado province of Mozambique, because of attacks by groups linked to Islamic extremism. No advisory applies to the rest of the country.

What we could not settle

  • The US and UK advisories disagree materially about Tanzania and both are published here unreconciled. A secondary source reported a US Level 2 as of March 2026; that could not be corroborated and the 31 October 2025 Level 3 is treated as current. The State Department page itself could not be retrieved during this review, so confirm the level directly before travelling.
  • A nationwide mandatory visitor insurance scheme for mainland Tanzania was reported as announced for January 2026. It could not be confirmed as in force and is not published as a requirement. The Zanzibar requirement, introduced in 2024, is separately reported and is published with that caveat.
  • No visa fees are published. Reported amounts differ by nationality and by source.
  • Park fees, permits and access conditions are not published. None was established from TANAPA directly in this review.
  • Provider availability, scope and pricing are confirmed for each assignment before booking.
